For a sartorial centrepiece that will be on heavy rotation for years to come, set the perfect tone with a high-shine dress. At 16Arlington, co-founder Marco Capaldo channels disco-era elegance with shimmering mini and maxi dresses in shades of lavender, teal and anthracite, while Bottega Veneta’s sequinned midi dress from creative director Matthieu Blazy’s debut collection offers something a little more directional.
Elsewhere, Victoria Beckham provides an elegant two-tone gold and silver top that shimmers and shines. You can dial the disco tone down a notch by teaming it with a neatly tailored tuxedo or a slinky maxi skirt. Or for all-out razzle-dazzle, shrug Jenny Packham’s sequined jacket over a fine knit and tailored pants, or even a white vest top and jeans, for desk-to-dancefloor decadence.
But for something truly show-stopping, turn to the king of sequins, Michael Halpern. His sequinned pieces became instant hits when he launched his eponymous brand in 2016. Halpern’s disco-inspired aesthetic was inspired by his mother’s stories of New York in the 1970s. “My mother used to be at Studio 54 wearing sequins,” he told AnOther magazine. “I think there’s a level of fearlessness that’s been lost with just wearing a nice dress… I want my friends to be in a bar wearing a pair of sparkling trousers, or wearing a tiny mini dress, and I want them to feel perfect.”
