Saya McDermott’s AM/PM Routine
Find out how the founder of Saya Skin begins and ends each day.
Saya McDermott, Founder of Saya Skin
It was never Saya McDermott’s intention to build a global skincare empire. A trained graphic designer, who also dabbled as a pilot for a couple of years, she started making products in her late teens because of her own skin issues. Fast forward 20 years, and a whole lot more experience later, and Saya Skin – the organic, vegan, native botanical skincare brand, based in Noosa, Queensland – is found in 200 outlets around Australia, as well as in the highly competitive markets of Asia and the US. Discover each step in Saya’s daily routine as she shares her favourite beauty advice and why consistency is key.

IN THE MORNING

The first thing I do is…

… make a coffee and head straight to the gym before the kids wake up. I always listen to a podcast on the way – I’m loving Glow Journal at the moment.

I usually do my full morning skincare routine…

… when I get back from the gym. I like to use more nourishing products in winter, so always start with Saya Skin’s Cleansing Balm and follow with the Glow Serum, Super Serum, Balance Moisture and lock everything in with our Renew Serum. I use sunscreen every day and at the moment I’m loving Ultra Violette Queen Screen – another amazing Australian-made, women-founded brand.

I also love a good scrub…

… I moisturise twice daily, and will use a body scrub at least once a week. A lot of people often forget about the skin on their body, but it’s just as important as face care to prevent ageing and keeping the skin healthy. Also, there is nothing worse than having dry legs!

If I’m having a bad face day…

… I’ll apply a face mask – it’s the best product to give your skin an instant boost. Clay-based masks with nourishing ingredients are great for drawing out impurities, stimulating circulation and hydrating the skin all in one go! A vitamin C serum is also a must product for me to help hydrate and give my skin a natural glow.

I try to workout at least five days a week…

… always in the morning. I currently go to F45 Noosa at 5am, but regularly walk in the Noosa National Park or along Noosa River.

When it comes to make-up…

… I like to keep it simple. As a mum of two, I haven’t got a huge amount of time in the morning. My staples are a simple face tint, brushed-through brows and some mascara.

For that extra little boost…

… There’s always coffee. Living in Noosa, we’re pretty lucky with great coffee. We have a bunch of local roasters and some amazing cafes around town. My favourites are Clandestino Roasters and Cafe Le Monde.

I also take my vitamins…

… I’m breastfeeding at the moment, so I’m taking the Nutraceuticals Multi Vitamin and JS Health Hair & Energy. I also take a hyaluronic acid and a collagen supplement.

IN THE EVENING

I’m not really blessed with a lot of time to unwind at the moment…

… it never really stops until the kids are in bed. That’s when I like to take time for myself, completing my skincare routine and spending time with my partner.

When it comes to dinner…

… I always opt for something quick and easy, but we like to eat super healthy, especially with the kids. And always dark chocolate for dessert, it’s my absolute favourite.

My night-time routine is pretty similar to my morning one…

It’s important to keep consistent in order to see results with skincare. I’ll usually opt for a nourishing overnight cream like Saya Skin’s Intense Night Repair, and I’ll double cleanse with my Cleansing Balm and Cleansing Gel to remove my makeup and sunscreen. I like to do my skin treatments at night, so will usually exfoliate or mask a couple of times a week too.

If I’m going out…

… I like to keep my make-up simple, maybe a little more bronzer and some lipstick. I love using the GHD Glide to smooth my hair – it keeps it looking natural but polished.

The best piece of beauty advice I ever received was…

… Never go to bed with your make-up on! Also, wear sunscreen. Growing up in Noosa and surfing, wearing sunscreen every day was and always will be an absolute must.
